In 1962 on the south end of Pismo Beach near Addie Street, began Pismo Beach Surf Shop. The First Pismo Beach Surf Shop Surfboard was made here by Ralph "Boots" Miller; the original owner of Pismo Beach Surf Shop. Pismo Beach Surf Shop Lives on in Pismo Beach with over 48 years of Surfing History.
Ralph Miller was responsible for the beginnings of our surf contests in Pismo Beach. In 1964 Jerry Grantham, Mike Doyle, Mike Purpus, Mike Fossecea, Jo Jo Perrin are seen in one of the first Pismo Beach Surf Contests. In the 60's Jerry is seen doing tandom surfing on the north side of the Pismo Beach Pier.
We not only provide Surfing Lessons, Stand-Up Paddle Board Lessons and Rentals; we also do Kayak Tours of our Central Coast and the Dinosaur Caves in Shell Beach. Please give us a call at 1-805-773-2089 to reserve a tour of our Central Coast.

We offer a complete line of rental wetsuits to fit every size. All wetsuits are clean and disinfected nightly for your safety. At time of rental you must be 18 years old and have a valid drivers license and credit card. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Surfing History in Pismo Beach goes back to the Chumash Indians in which the word Pismo comes from. Pismo in Chumash means "Tar". This histoy is lost, which bring us forward to the 50's and 60's. In July of 1962 began controverserys and restrictions for surfing and skimming; that would later establish and Ordinance NO. 106 regulating Surfing, Pier Fishing And Other Activities In The Vicinity Of The City Pier And Prescribing Penalties For Violation Thereof. ------------Surfing the South side of the pier-----------------------
At the Pismo Beach February 10, 1964 City Counsel meeting the controversay riponed between the Surfers and the Fisherman; inwhich Ralph Miller, owner of Pismo Beach Surf Shop, Jerry Granthem and many local Surfers spoke to a packed audienance of fisherman and local business owners. Dave Stratton spoke on behalf of the fisherman. The Surfers (50 of them) asked for the area on the south side of the pier from the rest rooms on the pier to land, with the balance of the pier for fishing. This impressive amount of well dressed Surfers made quite an impression on the City Counsel" Today Surfing at the Pismo Beach pier is fully accepted and this is just part of our great Pismo Beach Surfing History.
